Hello everyone! As Katie and I have been jumping into our TBR piles, we have a hard time not thinking about all of the books we had planned on reading last year, and just never got to. I could lie and say it was because we were busy reading so many other books, but truthfully we were probably just really lazy. It happens, oh well. So we decided to use this Top Five Friday to look back on the top books we really wish we read last year, and hopefully make the time to get to this year. Let’s jump on in!
5. Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody
I was so excited to get my hands on an ARC of this book at BookCon. It just sounds so dang interesting. I started reading it soon after but quickly realized the drawings weren’t in the ARC and decided to wait until the finished copy came out…and then just kept putting it off. But it is definitely one I want to get back into ASAP.
4. A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab
As an avid (and by avid I mean obsessive) Victoria Schwab fan, I am embarrassed to say I started ACOL and just stopped. You’ll come to understand I hate endings and tend to put newest or last books in a series off until I just can’t stand it anymore. But this does leave me with the chance to re-read this series before jumping back in and I think I would really enjoy that.
3. Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare
Did I mention I put off newest books in a series as long as I can? This is another example. I also started this one, just to stop. I’ll most likely wait until closer to the release of Queen of Air and Darkness and either read this or re-read Lady Midnight and then Lord of Shadows. Still bitter about this cover though.
2. Renegades by Marissa Meyer
I’m also super ashamed of this one because 1) I’m obsessed with anything Marissa Meyer touches and 2) I went to the launch for this book, so really I should have just sat down and read it. But I didn’t, and now I’m living in regret. It doesn’t help that there is so much hype built up around it. This one is certainly high on my 2018 to-read list.
1. This Dark Duet by Victoria Schab
Yes, I know. For someone who claims obsession, I have two Schwab books on this list. But I’ll say it again, I hate endings. And this, friends, is an ending. Ugh, I’ll get to it. But not before re-reading This Savage Song because it’s one of my favorite books.
5.Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody
I happened upon this ARC at BookExpo last year when I hopped into a random line, and I got to meet Amanda Foody (sheβs great!). After Ashley told me the ARC was missing the illustrations, I put it off until the finished copy, but I never got around to picking that up either.
4. Renegades by Marissa Meyer
I went to the book launch event for this release, and I was so excited to meet Marissa for the first time! She explained her whole writing process for this story and I was so pumped to start it. At YallFest, Ashley and I had some downtime, so I made it about 75 pages in and put it down for other things.
3. Even the Darkest Stars by Heather Fawcett
This one is probably the one Iβm most disappointed in myself for not finishing. I started this on a trip to my boyfriendβs family cabin at the beginning of September (yep, 4 months ago), I made it halfway through, and then randomly quit. The story was great, so there are no excuses.
2. Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao
Same situation as Daughter of the Burning City with this one, unfortunately. I met Julie at BookExpo, she signed my ARC, and Iβm a horrible person and put off reading it. Iβve heard nothing but good things, so Iβm excited to eventually read it though.
1. City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
I searched for months for an ARC of this one because I kept hearing amazing things about it, and then when I finally got my hands on one, I put it aside. Why? Because I have no follow-through. Hopefully, this year that changes.
What books do you wish you read in 2017? Let us know in the comments!
I read A Darker Shade of Magic a month or two ago and just got my hands on A Gathering of Shadows, so I’m also looking forward to digging into more Victoria Schwab this year! Happy reading!

I love her so much, and I hope you do too! I still have so much to read by her, but she’s brilliant. I hope you enjoy it! -A

I havenβt read any of these either! Iβve heard mixed things about Renegades but I still want to read it because I was super excited about it!

I’ve been trying not to look at Renegades reviews much because I just love Marissa Meyer and I know that I’ll read it no matter what. Fingers crossed that you and I both enjoy it! -A
