Top Five Friday | Halloween TBR

Hello, everyone! Today I wanted to talk about my TBR I have planned for October, specifically the spooky, Halloween reads! I have a few I’ve been saving for this time of the year, so I can’t wait to dive into these creepy reads!

1. The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White

38255342

When I first saw this cover, I have to admit: I hated it. I still kind of don’t like it, but I find it more unsettling than anything. Which is one of the main reasons I’ve saved it for this spooky season. This is basically a retelling of Frankenstein but told from a girl named Elizabeth’s perspective about the Frankenstein family. I’ve never read anything by Kiersten White, but I’m excited.

2. The Wicked Deep by Shae Ernshaw

35297394

I’ve owned this one for a little while, mostly because it’s beautiful. But it also gives me major Sanderson sisters/ Hocus Pocus vibes, and I’m here for it. It’s about a town with a history of sacrificing witches, and the spirits return to wreak havoc on the people who live there now. I’m all for these witchy stories!

3. The Lantern’s Ember by Colleen Houck

36546857

I’ve made it about four chapters into this one, and I’m definitely intrigued! The story follows Jack while he protects a city from the Otherworld while also hiding a witch named Ember. The cover alone drew me into this, and I’m happy to say it’s fulfilling all my autumnal needs.

4. What the Woods Keep by Katya de Becerra

29748448

This story was pitched to me as a darker The Hazel Wood, and I’m down for that. I enjoyed the whimsy and mystery of The Hazel Wood, but I had always hoped for a little more spook. Hopefully this one will deliver!

5. Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton

32824058

Strange Grace is about a village that made a pact with the devil, and every year on the Slaughter Moon, the townspeople must sacrifice a young man in the Devil’s Forest. Demons? Witches? Sacrifices? Count me in.

So those are the five spooky books I’m hoping to read before Halloween. I hope they deliver on the scares!

Until next time,

  1. I’m so excited to read The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein! I read White’s And I Darken series and LOVED it! Can’t wait to see how she retells the Frankenstein story.

Very interested in seeing what you think of all the books on this list. Happy reading Katie!
